Following Al Mouj Muscat’s, Oman’s lifestyle destination, commitment to reducing their ecological footprint and creating a more sustainable future for Oman, Al Mouj Golf has now been recognized for its leading environmental practices by GEO (Golf Environmental Organization).
The first step of the sustainability strategy for Al Mouj Golf was to be the first golf course in the Middle East to be Audubon certified, which they achieved in 2014. The second step was to be GEO certified. GEO is a global not-for-profit organisation, which measures sustainability and environmental practices within the golf industry.
Al Mouj Golf is now one of only three GEO certified properties in the region, the other two being The Emirates and The Creek in Dubai.
In order to set the standard for sustainable development in the region, Al Mouj Muscat has evolved through years of research on how best to apply and give life to great sustainability principles in the community. To accomplish its goals, Al Mouj Muscat has launched a series of projects across all its assets, promoting a shared responsibility for the environment.
Al Mouj Golf has achieved this renowned GEO certification for its standards across nature, water, energy, supply chain, pollution control, community, and showing commitment to continually improve. One of the key sustainability practices that Al Mouj Golf recognized for was its significant efforts to re-naturalize key areas of the golf course and to conserve biodiversity and natural habitats.
This initiative has been declared a success due to the abundance of bird species recorded at the golf course. While Al Mouj Golf collaborates with Environmental Society of Oman (ESO) in preparation of golf tournaments, it also engages visitors, members and staff in the clubs’ sustainability initiatives.
Nasser bin Masoud Al Sheibani, CEO of Al Mouj Muscat said, “Al Mouj Muscat is committed to taking practical measures to protect and conserve the environment during the design, construction and operation of its residential properties and amenities. It aims to provide an increasingly eco-friendly solution to those living and visiting Al Mouj Muscat, a key pillar in its journey to becoming a world-class tourist destination and sustainable community. It is a really big honour to receive this internationally recognised eco-label since it recognises the numerous nature conservation and resource efficiency activities that have been carried out. This certification validates that Al Mouj Golf is not just the number one golf course in Oman, but among the top golf courses in the region and world. We will continue to realize our sustainability goals and promote a shared responsibility for the environment.”
He added, “I must acknowledge and highlight the valuable role, hard work and dedication of Al Mouj Golf team in receiving this certification.”
