Captain William Welsh And Runner Up Aaron O'Hara

The Championship Course at Almouj Golf was stretched to its full length of 7310 yards for the inaugural running of the annual Black Tee Challenge.

The field of elite players assembled early on Thursday morning to commence their first round all eager to be crowned the Black Tee Champion and have their name placed on the trophy. The field comprised of many Almouj Golf Members as well as several of the Omani National Team and other low handicap members from the other clubs in Muscat. Each player was very aware that to earn the title of Black Tee Champion they would have to produce not one but two good rounds of golf over the challenging links layout as the winner would be decided by the best 36 hole Gross total.

With the length of the course and the early onset of some high temperatures Day 1 proved to be challenging for the competitors, National Team Player and 2 handicapper Azaan Al Rumhy made the best of the conditions carding a creditable gross 79 which ultimately took the overnight lead by 2 strokes over Almouj Golf Member and 6 handicapper Aaron O'Hara. 2013 Almouj Golf Men's Club Champion Tenzin Tsarong took joint third place after day 1 with an 85, the same score as recent Almouj Golf Swiss Air League winner Nasaruddin Mohamad.

WINNER Azaan Al Rumhy 2With the field reassembled in reverse score order Day 2 began with the opportunity for someone to come from the middle of the pack and set a clubhouse score that might trouble the leaders as they played the final stretch of holes. The player in question turned out to be ex Almouj Golf Member Mike Bulliman who put his local knowledge to good use carding a fine Gross 79, Mike's 36 hole Gross total of 170 asked the question of the overnight leaders who's rounds were all faltering somewhat around the turn. With a handful of holes to play it came down to the final three ball of Al Rumhy, O'Hara and Tsarong to beat the mark of 170 set by Bulliman. In the end all three players prevailed pushing the waiting Bulliman into a disappointing but well-earned 4th spot courtesy of his unbeaten Day 2 score of 79.

Despite constant changes to the lead the overall standings from the final three ball remained unchanged from their Day 1 scores with Azaan Al Rumhy producing a steady 84 to take the title of Almouj Golf Black Tee Champion for 2013 with a 36 hole total of 163, O'Hara took runner up spot adding an 84 to his Day 1 score of 81 for a total of 165 and Tsarong scored one better than his two playing partners with an 83 which combined with his 85 gave him third place on 168.

Overall the event was well received and gave the competitors the opportunity to play the course at its fullest, a feat which will be repeated by the European Challenge Tour later this year. Almouj Golf would like to thank Mercedes-Benz, The Chedi Muscat, Montblanc, Swiss Air and ProSports for supporting this and many other events throughout the season.
