Almouj Golf Diners Club Open

21 March 2013Back

Almouj Golf held its first ever Open Event on March 21st where handicap holding golfers from all local clubs came together to compete on the Championship Course.  It should be mentioned that we even had an international guest joining us from France!

Due to the challenging conditions early in the day which for a time looked as though they might force the event to be postponed the Tournament Committee made the wise decision to change the format of the event from a Strokeplay to a Stableford, this was met with unanimous approval from the 70 strong field of players.

The competitors were divided into three divisions; Men's 0-16 handicap, Men's 17 and above handicap and Ladies. Thanks to the title sponsor Diners Club the winner in each division would receive an invitation to participate in the annual Diners Club Pro-Am which this year would be played in Abu Dhabi. The runner up in each division received a hospitality pass for the 2014 Qatar Masters European Tour event and the third placed players won a ticket to the Muscat Opera.

In the Ladies division a very fine score of 38 points saw Yvonne Van Buitenen book her place to Abu Dhabi, finishing as runner up with 34 points was Shirley Prescott and in third position was Catherine Shackleton.

The tightest division for scoring was the Men's 17 and above the winning score of 37 points belonged to John Prescott who topped the leadboard courtesy of a better back 9 score over Danny Renihan who also scored 37 points.  Finishing in third position, again with a countback better back 9 score, was Chuck Sargent.

In the Men's 0-16 division a fantastic score of 42 points from 11 handicap Nasaruddin Mohamad took top honours with 7 handicap Aaron O'Hara finishing as runner up with 37 points, the only visitor to take a podium finish was Bharath Gopal from Ghala Valley who finished in third spot recording 36 points.

With the tournament prizes presented the attention turned to Renny Johnson, Executive Manager of Mazoon Travel the support sponsors who drew a name from the field of competitors. The lucky winner of a family holiday for 3 days to Sri Lanka was Almouj Golf member Karen D'Amours.

The first of many Open Events at Almouj Golf was a resounding success with all players enjoying the challenge of the Championship Course and the hospitality of the Academy Clubhouse. We look forward to the next Almouj Golf Diners Club Open in 2014.
