In an effort to ensure that competitive golf is made as
accessible as possible to the members of Almouj Golf the Saturday
Stableford series was born. Rather than a draw being made to decide
the groups with predetermined tee times the Saturday Stableford
allows players to register their own tee times and select their own
playing partners, the only proviso being that an official handicap
holder must mark each competitor's card.
21 players signed up for the second instalment of the series and
despite the Championship Course being prepared to host the
Challenge Tour the players made light of the longer rough and
quicker greens with some fantastic scoring.
Despite not scoring any points on the opening hole, 10 handicap
Iain Watters set the early pace with a fine opening 9 holes of 22
points. The 22 points were achieved by playing holes 2 to 9 in one
under par gross! Iain followed his opening 9 with an equally
impressive inward 9 of 20 points to give him a total of 42 points,
generally an insurmountable winning score. However on this occasion
Iain's score was only good enough to finish as runner up. Recent
joiner to Almouj Golf Tony Howland has shown promise since becoming
a member, finishing in 4th spot in the Anniversary at the end of
September. Tony playing off a handicap of 22 (at the moment!)
racked up an impressive 26 points on the outward 9 and consolidated
with 18 points on the home stretch for a total of 44 points. A
truly admirable score considering the difficulty of the course.
The top 10 scores for the day were as follows;
The next event in the fixture list is the Mercedes-Benz Member
Guest Accumulator which precedes the inaugural National Bank of
Oman Golf Classic at the end of October.
