On Course with Superintendent Steve Johnson

Over the last month we have started our annual summer maintenance programme for both the Championship and Par 3 courses, to keep them in the best condition possible.

Over the next few months, we will be ‘hollow coring’ or aerating all playing surfaces several times. This process allows the soil to breath by removing a small plug of grass and soil and allowing water to get to the roots. These practices encourage longer and denser grass roots, which results in firmer, faster playing surfaces during our peak golfing season.

It is our intention to aerate all of the greens four times over the summer period.

Maintenance Dates for the Championship course greens –

·   21 July

·   25 August

Maintenance Dates for the Par 3 course greens –

·   28 July

·   1 September

Please note, the respective courses will be closed on these dates and we anticipate a seven- to 10-day recovery period for the playing surfaces.

Preferred lies are now in play on all closely mown playing surfaces and will be so until 30 September.

Please also note, the Championship Course will be closed until 9am each Monday morning from June so that we can lightly top-dress greens and any other essential works can be completed.

We thank you for your support and understanding during this high-maintenance period.
